Area Description:
San Jose is the third-most populous city in California after Los Angeles and San Diego, and is the county seat of Santa Clara County. The city is located at the south end of the San Francisco Bay within the informal boundaries of Silicon Valley. It is the largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area.
San Jose lies in the Santa Clara Valley between the Mount Hamilton and Santa Cruz ranges. Founded as Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe in November 1777, the settlement was established to raise crops and cattle for the nearby presidios of San Francisco and Monterey. In 1849 San Jose became the state's first capital--until 1851. San Jose now is known as the "Capital of Silicon Valley" for the technological innovations that have been forthcoming.
HP Pavilion at San Jose, at W. Santa Clara and Autumn streets, is home to the city's NHL hockey team, the San Jose Sharks. Other college and professional sporting events, in addition to musical and entertainment events, also are held at the arena.
