Area Description:
Reno is the county seat of Washoe County, Nevada. Current estimates place the population of the city proper at 207,000. Reno lies 26 miles (42 km) north of the Nevada state capital, Carson City, and 22 miles (35 km) north-east of Lake Tahoe in the high desert. Reno shares its eastern border with the city of Sparks. Reno, known as The Biggest Little City in the World, is famous for its casinos, and is the birthplace of the gaming corporation Harrah's Entertainment.
Full of stage shows and gambling establishments that operate 24 hours a day, Reno is a city of diverse extremes, calling itself "The Biggest Little City in the World." Its neon lights supply the same excitement as Las Vegas, but Reno also is an important distribution and merchandising center, has extensive residential areas and is the home of the University of Nevada, Reno.
Reno is at the southwestern end of a scenic route consisting of SRs 445, 446 and 447. These highways run through Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation and follow the southern shoreline of Pyramid Lake.
