Area Description:
The City of Orange (often referred to as "Plaza City") is located in Orange County, California. It is approximately 3 miles (6 kilometers) north of the County seat in Santa Ana, California, and approximately 32 miles (52 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles. The Current OMB metropolitan designation for Orange and the Orange County Area is "Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine, CA."
Orange is home to parks, lakes, a small zoo, and a wildlife sanctuary. The Block at Orange, a major shopping and entertainment center for the region, is located on the western edge of the City. Orange borders the cities of Santa Ana, Tustin, Villa Park, and Anaheim, the home of Disneyland.
In 1869 two Los Angeles attorneys, Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell, received 1,385 acres of land as payment for legal services. They subdivided the land into a 1-square-mile town surrounded by farm lots. Orange sprang up around the circular central plaza at Chapman Avenue and Glassell Street. Chapman University, home of the Cecil B. De Mille Film School, is 2 blocks north of the plaza. The university was a location for the 1999 film "Rocky and Bullwinkle."
