Area Description:
Lake Tahoe is a freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada, on the border between the U.S. states of California and Nevada, near Carson City. Approximately two-thirds of the shoreline is in California. The area is home to a number of ski resorts.
Lake Tahoe, which holds enough water to cover the entire state of California to a depth of 14 inches, was named "big water" by the Washoe Indians. Their legend says Lake Tahoe was created when an Evil Spirit was in pursuit of an innocent American Indian. Attempting to aid the Indian, the Great Spirit gave him a branch of leaves; each leaf dropped would produce a body of water that the Evil Spirit would have to circumvent. But during the chase, the Indian dropped the whole branch in fright--creating Lake Tahoe.
The U.S. Forest Service Visitor Center on SR 89 between Camp Richardson and Emerald Bay offers free orientation programs; a Stream Profile Chamber, an underground viewing chamber allowing a cross-section view of Taylor Creek; and a 10-minute, quarter-mile walking trail. Open daily 8-5:30, mid-June through Sept. 30; Sat.-Sun. 8-4:30, Memorial Day weekend to mid-June (weather permitting). Phone (530) 543-2674. Wilderness permits for hiking are available adjacent to the visitor center; phone (530) 647-5415 for same-day permits or for permit reservations.
