Area Description:
Jacksonville is in the great double loop of the St. Johns River, the nation's longest north-flowing river. A busy seaport, it is one of Florida's major cultural, financial, industrial, transportation and commercial centers. The city also is a wholesale lumber market and coffee importation port and is home to a naval stores yard.
City and county governments consolidated in 1968, which made Jacksonville the largest U.S. city in land area at the time; at 841 square miles, it is still the largest. In 1996 the metropolitan area's population passed the 1 million mark, and today Jacksonville remains a major port, financial center, site of military bases and a health center that continues to grow rapidly.
