Area Description:
Honeycombed by rivers, bays, inlets and canals, Fort Lauderdale is a city of islands, where the boat rivals the automobile as a mode of transportation. One-tenth of the city surface is water; 85 miles of navigable waters provide either home or temporary port for boats of all sizes. The Intracoastal Waterway, a canal system reminiscent of Venice, connects downtown office buildings, the galleries and boutiques on Las Olas Boulevard, and the museums, theaters and nightspots of Riverwalk.
Fort Lauderdale is primarily residential; with the exception of the waterfront and beach areas, it does not give the appearance of a resort community. The canals and waterways furnish a striking setting for many beautiful homes, the most lavish of which are east of US 1. However, residential does not necessarily mean sedate--Fort Lauderdale's clubs and discotheques offer a flourishing nightlife.
