Area Description:
What started as a simple crossroads named for a young queen has grown into the second-largest financial center in the country. Still adhering to its nucleus, Charlotte has expanded upward and outward to become the largest metropolitan area in the Carolinas, draped with an attractive skyline.
The city came into being when a group of Scot-Irish immigrants en route from Philadelphia settled at the juncture of two American Indian trading posts. Since the nearby Catawba River posed certain navigational difficulties, colonists opted to establish roots east of the river. The intersection of Trade Street (named for the trading that took place there) and Tryon Street (named for Governor William Tryon, the Royal Governor of North Carolina at the time of the city's founding) remains the heart of Uptown.
